If you are like many people, you may think that cats are emotionless creatures that cannot be trained at all. But that is not be the case. Although your kitty seems to ignore your commands sometimes but at other times, she is not obeying you because she may not understand your instructions.
Yes, it is possible to train a cat but generally takes a lot more time. It also takes a lot more patience to train a cat than it takes to train a dog. With the feline kind, positive encouragement and praises works better than punishment. They don't take kindly to punishment and will just wait until you are not watching to do more mischief. So it is a lot better to ignore unwanted responses from your cat and give praise when she responds correctly. Carrots, not sticks.
When to start the training? You should start training your feline friend when she is about 8 to 10 weeks old. However, if you have an older cat, don't fret because it is still possible to train her. It may be a bit harder to teach her but you can still do it with patience.
You should start to train your cat by encouraging her to come to you when she is being called. In order to achieve success, ensure you have a ready supply of your cat's favorite snacks and that she is feeling contented and happy. Move to a quieter area if there is a lot of noise and confusion so little kitty is not agitated.
Decide on one command and be sure you use it consistently even before you start anything. Use commands that are short and easy to say, like "Hey kitty" or '"Come kitty". Decided on a good command already? Now you are ready to start training your kitty. Sit or kneel on the floor and call her to you using the command you have decided on. You must call her in an excited and happy way. When she comes to you, give her a treat and praise her instantly.
Now, repeat the come command. Remember not to train your cat for longer than 10 minutes per session. If she starts to be feel bored or frustrated, stop the training immediately. Ideally, you should hold two or three training sessions per day for a week. When you are certain that she has really understood the meaning of the come command, you can start to teach her other commands such as "no" or "stay".
In addition to the above, there are also many other things you should teach your feline pet for her own good. She should learn to stand a harness and leash on her. That is in case you need to travel long distances with her or take her to the vet. She should learn to use a crate for the same reasons.
You can teach your cat how to use a harness and leash by putting the harness on her first. Once it is in place, don't restrain her in any way. Praise her and be sure to give your kitty her favorite cat snack. When she is used to the harness, attach the leash and let her lead you around the place a bit.
Then encourage her to follow you by offering more tasty snacks and more praises. Don't expect your cat to actually learn to heel on the leash. However you should expect her not to panic and struggle when she is on the leash.
Here's how to teach your kitty to use a crate. Put a nice little comfortable blanket and a favorite toy in her crate. Praise her as you place her in the crate and then leave her inside for 2 or 3 minutes before releasing her. Do not make a fuss about releasing her, instead reward her for going into the crate. Slowly extend the time you leave your cat in the crate each time, until she gets comfortable staying in her crate for more than 1 hour.
